A meniscus tear occurs when the menisci, two half-moon-shaped menisci inside the knee joint, are damaged. These tears can often be caused by sports injuries, excessive rotation of the knee joint, aging or degeneration. Meniscus tears can cause symptoms such as knee pain, swelling, locking sensations and frequent knee dysfunction. Arthroscopic treatment is a minimally invasive surgical procedure currently used to treat meniscal tears. Arthroscopic surgery is performed with a thin, lighted tube called an arthroscope to view and treat the inside of the knee joint. Details of arthroscopic treatment:

  1. Patient Assessment: The doctor assesses the size and type of meniscal tear based on the patient’s symptoms, examination and especially MRI images.
  2. Preparation: Arthroscopic meniscus surgery is performed under regional or general anesthesia. The patient’s knee is prepared in a sterile way for cleaning.
  3. Placement of the arthroscope:The doctor inserts the arthroscope into the knee joint through a small skin incision. This allows a lighted camera to be used to examine the joint.
  4. Treatment: The doctor can repair or remove the torn meniscus. If possible, the torn part is repaired and sutured. Repair is not always possible, especially with degenerative tears.
  5. Recovery: In the postoperative period, patients may need to rest, participate in physical therapy and use medications recommended by the doctor.

Advantages of arthroscopic treatment:It creates less tissue damage with smaller incisions than traditional open surgery.Patients usually feel less pain and recover faster.Arthroscopic surgery also reduces the risk of infection. However, every patient and meniscal tear is different, so the treatment approach should be individualized. It is important to consult an orthopaedic surgeon or specialist doctor for more information about meniscus tears and treatment options.
